Scotty Thiel and Team 73 unveil loaded true outlaw campaign; Action kicks-off March 18 at Attica Raceway Park

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (March 1, 2022) - After months of hard work and persistent planning, the “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel and Team 73 are ready to hit the road in 2022, launching their busy and ultra-competitive campaign with back-to-back nights in the Buckeye State on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. Scheduled to visit Ohio in consecutive weekends, Thiel’s March agenda will activate with treks to Attica Raceway Park and Atomic Speedway, respectively, returning to the pair of Ohio ovals just one weekend later, Friday and Saturday, March 25-26.
“I’m pretty excited to get the year started. This is one of the most aggressive schedules this team and I have ever attempted,” Scotty Thiel explained, driver of the Walker’s Game Ear, Stealth Cam, Muddy Outdoors, Gibbsville Cheese, Professional Plating Inc, Scott Thiel Builders, Complete Water Inc, No. 73 sprint car. “We wanted to get the season kicked-off in Georgia and Florida, but after looking at the weather, we decided it was probably in our best interest to just scratch that plan and finish up last minute preparations…it worked out for the best.”
Ultimately setting aside the notion to chase any individual track or series championship, Thiel’s upcoming agenda is diverse and ambitious, ready to go head-to-head with all the premiere touring winged sprint car sanctioning bodies including the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, All Star Circuit of Champions, IRA Outlaw Sprint Series, and the Ohio-based FAST Series. In addition, Thiel’s campaign includes a handful of the sport’s biggest blockbusters including Knoxville Raceway’s annual Knoxville Nationals, the Jackson Nationals at Jackson Motorplex, and the All Star sanctioned Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race at I-70 Speedway. Thiel will eventually cap his year with an appearance at the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, North Carolina.
“It took us a while to finalize our 2022 plans,” Thiel continued. “Following a specific series was on our mind. Logistically, a few made sense, but some did not. A ‘true outlaw’ schedule would allow us to hit a lot of big events within eight hours of our shop while still entering a lot of races. At the end of the day, we all work full-time jobs. We are fortunate to have flexible employers that allow us to do a lot of racing but being on the road for weeks at a time was going to be almost impossible.”
Perhaps the most grueling segment of Thiel’s 2022 agenda is the six-race/three-weekend swing through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. Spanning April 8-23, the “Big Wheel” will encounter the World of Outlaws at US 36 Raceway, Lake Ozark Speedway, Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, Tri City Speedway, and Tri-State Speedway in consecutive fashion.
“In order to get to the next level, we have to push ourselves to race bigger events and race with the best. We have an amazing group of partners who are allowing us to do that, while still making some time for events close to home.”
Although Thiel and Team 73 are prepared to battle out on the road, their Wisconsin home base will also serve as a frequent stomping ground. World of Outlaws, All Star, and IRA appearances within the Badger State will give the Sheboygan native plenty of opportunities to shine in his own backyard. Highlighted events include World of Outlaws doubleheaders at Cedar Lake Speedway and Beaver Dam Raceway, as well as an All Star/IRA triple at Wilmot Raceway, Plymouth Dirt Track, and Angell Park Speedway.
“Things really started to click last year, especially after my accident. The plan is to continue building on that progress and capitalize on all our opportunities. We know our team has the potential to do great things, but we also know the level of talent and experience that we’ll be up against. It’s up to us to take things one day at a time and build on our performances. I’m confident we have what it takes to be competitive every time we are on the racetrack.”
