Scotty Thiel: Top 5 at Manitowoc!

Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports team headed out to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway on Friday August 16th to race with the MSA 360 Sprint Car Series. After an impressive heat race performance from the 8th starting position and racing up to 2nd, it allow for Thiel to start the 30 lap A-main event in the 8th spot. Thiel would go on to race his way up to the 4th spot after battling three wide with the race leaders.

Drawing a 50 pill isn’t always on the top of every drivers list, but Scotty Thiel did it and knew he would have to work hard in order to have any shot at starting up front for the nights 30 lap A-main event. Scotty would start last (8th) in the 10 lap heat race event. The field took the green and Thiel decided to take the high side groove and move up from eighth to third in one corner. He charged his way down the back stretch and reeled in the second place car. After battling for a few laps, Scotty was able to get passed and moved up into the second position. The checkered flag flew and Scotty would earn the high point driver of the night after moving up six positions in the heat race. The officials rolled an eight for the invert which would set Thiel to start in the eighth place position for the nights A-main event.

A great race track was presented to the field as both bottom and top grooves seemed to be fast all night long. The crew worked hard to prepare the car for Scotty and he knew he would have his work cut out for him to get up to the front. The field would get pushed off on the track and prepared to take the green flag. As they took the green out of turn four, Scotty preceded to use the top side of the track and maintained his position. After a few laps were completed the field began to settle in and Scotty knew he had a pretty fast car to work with. The top side became the preferred line but Thiel was carrying a lot of momentum that he was forced to work the bottom and middle groove in order to get around the cars. He lost a few spots after getting boxed in on the bottom side but after a caution came out at the midway point of the main, he would restart on the high side where the preferred line was. The field went back to green and Scotty pulled the same move he did in the heat as he jumped up top and moved his way up to the fourth position in only one corner. A battle began over the fourth spot but a caution would come back out on lap 24, giving the fourth place spot back to Thiel. On the restart, Scotty was able to get a great jump and stuck his nose in the middle of turn one and two. The field went three wide but Scotty was unable to make the car stick and settled back into the fourth spot going down the backstretch. The checkered flag began to wave and Thiel was unable to move up and more positions but came home in a solid fourth place finish.

“We had a great heat race run tonight. That was a good motivator the main. I just messed up early on when I went low. Lost too much ground and that’s what cost us a shot at the win tonight. Overall, a good night, and we will try to get a win next Wednesday here!”

Saturday night took the team five hours away to the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin with the Upper Midwest Sprint Series. Scotty started third in the heat race and was running in the third spot when the motor expired in the car. It appeared that they broke a rod which punched a hole through the oil pan. That ended the team’s chances at winning the $2,100 to win Kouba Memorial Event.

Plans for the 64 team this coming week will be Wednesday night at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway for their Fair Night event. Following Wednesdays racing action will be Saturday night at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
