Scotty Thiel - Podium Run at Lee County Speedway!
A six hour haul marked the next stop for the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports sprint car team at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa for the second event on the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invader Series. After 25 laps of green flag racing action, Scotty Thiel drove the Professional Plating, Triple X, Gaerte Powered sprint car to a solid 3rd place podium finish!
Scotty drew a nine pill which set him to start on the outside front row of the heat race event. The field came down for the green flag and it was a drag race going into the first corner. Thiel drove in deeper and took over the lead and never looked back. After eight laps of racing action, he would take home the checkered flag. During the draw for the dash line-up, Scotty picked a three (3) pill which would mark his starting spot for the six lap Shake-Up Dash event.
Thiel struggled on the start of the Shake-Up Dash and fell back to the fourth position on the first lap. He quickly made up time and worked over the third position a lap later. Six laps went quick and he would finish in the third spot and after the invert, he would start in the fifth position for the night’s 25 lap A-Main event.
The 20 car field took the track for the final race of the night. Scotty lined up in the fifth position and prepared for the green flag to drop. After struggling on the start again, he would go into turn one in the seventh spot. He worked his way back up through the field and would hold on to the fourth position for until the half-way point. A caution would come out for a car spinning in turn one. The field lined back up to finish the remaining portion of the event. After taking the green flag again, Scotty began to work his way up for position. He made the pass for the third spot but after making contact with a lap car, he would fall back in the fourth position again. A few laps later, heavy lap traffic came into play and Scotty was able to work his way around and pass again for the third spot. A clear track set forth for Thiel but he would run out of laps to get up to the top two cars and would take the checkered flag in the third place position.
“We had a good Professional Plating, XXX, Gaerte powered sprint car tonight,” said the third place Thiel. “It took rubber early on. I was doing well in it, but I thought I’d try the high side. We bobbled up and dropped a few spots. We had the caution, and after that I thought we had a better shot. I messed up a little too much. If we got clear of the lapped cars a little earlier, we may have had a shot at it. We’ll review the night and prepare for Davenport tomorrow night.”
**Mother Nature would take the Saturday night portion of race action at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa. The field of 26 cars completed heat races which Scotty started 8th and finished 5th. Once the decision was made to run all of the remaining 24 cars in the A-main, a torrential down pour came through, cancelling the races for the evening.
Next up for the #64 STM sprint car team will be April 19th at the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence, Iowa again with the Sprint Invaders followed by April 20th at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI for the opening weekend of the MSA Sprint Car Series.
