Scotty Thiel – Second Place with Sprint Invaders at 34 Raceway
After pondering the thought of potential weather affecting the racing at the DOC 360 Frostbuster opener for the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa Saturday night, Scotty Thiel drove the #64 Professional Plating Inc sprint car to a solid second place finish.
The team took the risk of driving five and half hours to the 34 raceway in Burlington, Iowa on Saturday evening. This was the season opener for the Brockway Mechanical Sprint Invader Series. Scotty drew a 25 pill which set him to start fourth in the third heat race event. The track crew did a beautiful job with the race track after considering the fact there was still snow still on the ground a week before hand.
Heat race action began as Scotty got a great start and drove into the second position coming out of turn two. On the next lap, Scotty was right on the leaders’ tail and would take over the lead coming out of turn two on the third lap. A caution would come out a lap later and Scotty would bring the field back to green flag action. Again, with a great start, Scotty pulled away from the field. After eight laps of green flag action, he would take the checkered flag. That heat win would allow him to be in the redraw for the night’s six lap shake-up dash.
Scotty drew a six pill for the shake-up dash event. The eight car field got set into place for the six lap dash. They came for the green and charged into turn one. Scotty took the low line and grabbed the third place spot going down the back stretch. A short six laps later, he would take the third place finishing position. After the invert, Thiel would start in the fifth place spot for the night’s 25 lap A-main event.
The 20 car field got lined back up after the four wide salute to the fans and would come to take the green flag for the first time of the 2013 Sprint invader season. A few cars got squirrely going down the front stretch which caused a scatter but they all held on and settled in down the backstretch. Scotty moved up into the fourth position right away and with only two laps in, the second and third place cars got together coming out of turn four and flipped. After the red flag, that moved Thiel up to the second position and still 22 laps remained. The field would take the green flag again and Scotty trailed the leader. They hit lap traffic in a few laps and the Scotty began to pressure the leader for position. Several opportunities came to make the pass but Thiel would get shut down by lapped cars. He charged back at it but was never able to make the top spot pass occur. After 25 laps of racing action, Scotty would come home with a solid second place finish.
“We had a good car at the end,” said second place Thiel. “I was a little leery about turn three. I drove underneath it and it worked. Maybe I could have driven it a little harder and made it happen. I’m kicking myself a little bit for that. (Krieger) gave me the encouragement to try up top, but by then we were short of laps. Overall we had a good Professional Plating, Triple X, Gaerte Powered 360 tonight, just wish we could have taken the win, but we will work on it this week and prepare for Donnellson and Davenport next weekend!”
Scott Thiel Motorsports will be traveling with the Sprint Invaders next weekend for two nights which occur Friday at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa and Saturday at the Davenport Speedway in Davenport, Iowa.
