Scotty Thiel - Top 10 at East Bay's King of the 360's!

The #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team traveled 22 hours to the East Bay Raceway Park in Riverview, Florida for the annual King of the 360’s event. Three nights of racing took place, starting on Thursday night, where Scotty would pick a 261 pill out of 500 to start out the heat race which placed him outside of the fourth row.

A fast and tacky track was set in place and Scotty would only be able to pick up on spot after running the eight lap event. Thiel would have to go on to race his way through the B-main where he started in the eighth position in the second B. The field took the green and Scotty began to charge forward and would settle into the fifth spot and run until a caution came out with two laps to go. On the restart, Scotty was able to get a good jump and charged his way into the fourth and final transfer spot going into turn one. He wasn’t done, as he was able to make a move for the third spot going into turn three on the last lap. That finish would place Scotty in the 18th starting spot for the night’s 25 lap A-main event.

The field took the green for the 25 lap A-main event and only a few laps into the race the track began to take rubber. This would make for limited passing and tore tires up. Scotty was unable to move anywhere and rounded out the night with an 18th place finish.
Starting out night number two, Thiel would pick a 45 pill out of 50 and start 11th in the third heat race event. After racing hard on another tacky track, he would only be able to pick up a few spots and rounded out the heat in the 9th position. That finish would set Thiel in the second b-main event, starting inside of the fourth row. The field would go to green flag action and Scotty started to slowly make his way up through the field. He would again, settle in the fifth spot for a few laps and caught the fourth place car with only one lap to go. A lap car came into place coming out of turn two and Scotty dove down to the inside of turns three and four to make the pass right at the line for the fourth and final transfer position. That would allow for Scotty to take the 20th starting position for the night’s 25 lap A-Main event.

The field took the green flag and picked up a few spots in the first corner. He started to work the middle groove and charged forward. A couple of early cautions came but the remainder of the race went green to checker. Scotty worked his way up to the 14th position and would fall inches short of taking over the 13th spot on the last lap. It was a solid run for the night and would place Scotty 13th in overall combined points from Thursday and Friday.
The top 6 from overall points were locked into the final night’s 40 Lap, $10,000 to win King of the 360’s event and the remaining cars were placed into heat races, where the top two from each heat would be locked in as well as the top three from each B-Main, making a 20 car A-main.

Scotty would be placed on the outside of the third heat race. He knew he had to run well and finish top two in order to secure an A-main starting spot. The field came to the green and Scotty drove hard into turn one and would take over the lead. In the fast eight laps he never looked back and would take the checker flag by over a straightaway lead. That would secure him a 9th place starting spot for the King of the 360’s 40 Lap A-Main event.

The 20 car field got lined up in position and would come down to take the green flag. On the third lap a caution would come out and Scotty was in the eight place position at that time. The field took the green again and began to spread out. Thiel worked his way up to sixth position and held it with 8 laps to go and lost a few spots with only a couple laps remaining. After running 37 straight green flag laps, Scotty would round out the night in the eighth place position!

“Oh wow, that was a challenge. 40 laps on tacky track pretty much wide open takes a toll on a guy. I’m really happy with an 8th place finish. Extremely happy with how the week went. We made all three night’s A-mains including the King of the 360’s! Finishing top 10 is a big accomplishment and a huge motivator for the 2013 season. Can’t thank my crew and Jeff for setting up a wicked fast car as well as all of my partners for their support with our race team!” Scotty Thiel would mention after the King of the 360’s event.

Only 11 drivers out of a field of 48 made the A-main event each of the three nights. Scotty was included in that 11. That alone, was a big accomplishment for the team.

Scott Thiel Motorsports would like to thank all of their great marketing partners that were on board for the King of the 360’s event!
