Scotty Thiel - Scores Second Win at Manitowoc!
Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports crew came to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway on Friday August 10th with an itch to go racing. The previous weekend was won by mother nature but gave the team a chance to re-group and focus. Scotty drew a 45 pill which set him to start sixth in the heat race event. The field took the green flag and Thiel worked the top side of the track and gained a bunch of positions. After two laps were completed, Scotty was already in the third spot. The leader would blow his engine and bump Thiel up to the second spot. The checkered flag flew and Scotty finished in the second position and gave him a fourth place starting spot in the night's 30 lap A-Main event!
The field took the green flag to start the nights A-main. A caution came out quickly as a few cars got tangled together on the first lap. Scotty passed one car in that first lap and would restart on the high side of the double file restart. The field went back to green and Thiel was able to get a good start and be right on the leaders tail. Going into turn one, Thiel dove down to the bottom and completed the pass for the lead coming out of turn two. A caution would come out a lap later but Thiel was scored as the leader. Scotty brought the field back down to the green and began to pull away. In two laps, he caught lap traffic and drove through it well. Several other cautions and one red flag would take place during the course of the race. A caution came out with only 6 laps to go but that didn't phase Thiel as he was able to get a good jump and never look back. The white flag flew and Thiel had a full straightaway lead on the field. He would then go to take the checkered flag and his second MSA Sprint Car Series win of the season! "This car was hooked up tonight. When I have a guy like Jeff Robinson wrenching on it, I don't have to worry one bit. He makes my job easy! I cannot thank my crew enough for all the hard work. Hopefully we can continue this streak!" Thiel explained in Victory Lane.
The team celebrated the remaining part of the night but would be right back to work in the morning to prepare for the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Scotty drew a 50 pill which set him to start eighth in the heat race event. The field went green and Scotty began to sneak his way through to the front. He worked the bottom side and would jump to the fourth spot in a few laps. He would stay there for the remaining part of the race and grab an eighth place starting spot for the night's 25 lap A-main event.
The track was extremely dry slick and looked to be a follow the leader type track. The field took the green and that was exactly the case. Scotty tried to make the outside groove work but lost way to many positions and was faced with trying to gain all that back running the bottom. Fortunately, several cautions flew and would allow the field to get bunched back up for the restarts. Thiel had dropped all the way back to the 15th spot but on the last restart with four laps to go, he was in the seventh spot. The field went back to green and Scotty used the middle groove to gain a few spots back. The field took the white flag and Scotty was setting up to pass for the third position until a car stopped going into turn one and Thiel had nowhere to go. He slammed into the back of that car, got sideways, was hit by another car which straightened Thiel's car out. Scotty took off from the tangled up and would take the checkered flag in the ninth position. "The track was garbage tonight but we started to come back around in the end. Probably would have had third there if it wasn't for whatever happened in one.. what can you do" Scotty said after the event.
It was an exciting weekend overall for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team. They scored their second win of the season and locked in a top 10 at Plymouth.
The team will travel back to the Manitowoc Speedway on Friday night. Saturday night will take the team to Burlington, IA where they had a solid run back in early July, and Sunday could potentially bring them to LaSalle, IL to run with the IRA 410 series.
