Scotty Thiel - Top 3 and Top 10 Weekend!
The Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team took a week off from traveling and stayed back home to run at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway on Friday night and at the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday night. Scotty drew a 4 pill on Friday night to start on the pole of the heat race event. After the field took the green flag, Thiel would check out and never look back, capturing the win and locking in a outside front row starting spot for the night's 30-Lap A-Main event.
The field took the green for the A-Main and Scotty fell into the second spot going into turn one. The leader worked the low line as Scotty shot around the top side. A red flag came out early in the event, allowing the field to get bunched back up with the double file restart. After going green flag racing again, Scotty and the third place car began to battle. It was a good show for the fans as they raced neck and neck, making slide jobs and wheel to wheel action. Scotty missed the bottom groove in turn one and fell back to third for a few laps but a caution came out and regrouped the field. Only five laps remained and Scotty restarted on the outside of the restart. He knew he had one opportunity to take the lead and it would have to be done going into turn one. They took the green and Thiel launched into turn one but could not gain the ground to take the lead and fell back into the second position. The field settled in and after 30 laps, Scotty would come home in the second position. "Hey, it was a goodnight, car was fast but I thought I would be faster up top. Ben (Schmidt) was fast down on the bottom. Glad he got the win for his nephew who was tragically killed this past week" Thiel explained after the race.
Saturday night would take the team to the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI. Scotty drew a 31 pill which set him to start fifth in the heat race event. It was a narrow track all throughout the heat races and Thiel could only make one pass and came home in the fourth position. It was good enough to make the A-main and with the invert, he would start in the 12th spot for the night's 25 lap event.
The field took the green flag for the A-main event and Scotty charged forward in the first few corners. He made several passes until a caution came out. They went back to green flag action and Thiel started to charge again. He was in the eighth spot at the half way point of the race and moved up to the sixth spot before a red flag came out with only three laps to go. The field would get pushed back off and regrouped for a green, white, checkered finish. Scotty lost a spot after returning to green but quickly made it back up and would take the checkered flag in the sixth spot. "It was a respectable night for the Professional Plating, Triple X car. It was kind of a one lane track for the most part. Coming from 12th isn't too bad. Glad we were able to finish one here since the last few weeks haven't gone too well." Scotty said after the race.
Overall, it was a good weekend for the STM crew. They were originally going to go race the MOWA event at the Peoria Speedway in Peoria, IL on Thursday but decided to take that day off and prepare for back home again on Friday and Saturday.
