Scotty Thiel - Solid First Week of July - 1 Win, 1 Top 5, 1 Top 10!

A five hour haul would bring the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to a hot, 96 degree, Burlington, IA on July 3rd for a make up feature and a complete new show. Scotty was scheduled to start in the 11th position for the first 25 lap feature. At the drop of the green flag, Thiel began his charge forward. Several cautions took place throughout the 25 lap event which only helped out Scotty to get the field bunched back together. He was picking off cars not one but sometimes two or three in one corner. A caution came out with only 4 laps to go and Scotty found himself sitting in the third position, with an opportunity to win the feature. They returned to green flag action and Scotty raced with the second place car but could not complete the pass and would fall back to third. Thiel had one shot to take over second place on the white flag lap going into turn three. He would get along side that car but the drag race to the finish would give advantage to the second place car. Scotty would end up coming home with a solid third place finish. "Man, we had the car dialed in for this one. Needed 5 more laps and I think we could of had this one." Scotty stated after the race.

The crew prepared for the second event for the night which started off with heat race action. Scotty started on the pole of the third heat. After taking the green flag in that race, Thiel would take over the lead and never look back, taking the checkered flag by well over a half of a lap! That finish would allow Scotty to run the Shake Up Dash. He drew a 4 pill which set him to start fourth in the six lap race. After going green, he charged his way forward to a second place finish. With the leader picking the invert, Scotty would start fifth in the nights 34 Lap A-Main event. A competition red would come out on lap 20, where the drivers would stop on the front stretch and crews were given 12 minutes to make changes to the car. After the 12 minutes were up, the drivers would then race the remaining 14 laps.

Scotty started in the fifth position and only a few laps in found himself racing in the third spot with the leaders right in front of him. Thiel was making the low line in turns three and four work and was getting ready to make the pass on the leaders. Before Scotty knew it, the leaders took each other out, and was faced with a huge decision as the lead car was facing towards him. Thiel got the car sideways and slapped wheels with the lead car, but managed to hold on and keep the car from flipping. He stalled out and would have to tag the rear of the field. Scotty worked his way up to the 15th position when the red flag on lap 20 came out. The crew made several changes to the car and put some new tires on. The field returned to green flag action and Scotty had his work cut out for him as he tried to pick off cars in only 14 laps. With one lap to go, Thiel found himself sitting in the 11th position and made a huge pass going into turn three which battled for a 9th place position but as the cars dragged race down the front stretch, Thiel fell short and took home a 10th place finish. "That deal early on was a bummer but I'm glad we didn't wreck anything. The car was wicked fast and it was the one to beat. Trying to come back up through the field in that short amount of time was difficult." Scotty explained after the 34 lap event.

The crew drove back home and took the 4th of July off from the shop but had to work hard on Thursday to get their MSA car prepared to race on Friday at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway. Scotty would draw a 43 pill which set him to start sixth in the third heat race event. After a few laps of the field getting settled in, Scotty found himself sitting in the 4th position and would also take the checkered flag in that spot. With a 12 invert, that would allow Thiel to take the outside front row starting spot for the night's 25 Lap A-Main event! After going green flag racing, Scotty jumped up on the high side and never looked back. He began to lap cars in the matter of four laps. Many cautions took place throughout the race which made Scotty get on the wheel of the restarts. He would take the green flag with only a few laps to go and again worked the high side and pulled hard away from the field. He would go on to capture his first win of the 2012 season! "Man, this one feels good! It's our first of the year but we should really have about 5 wins right now. I have one of the best setting up this hotrod, Jeff Robinson. I can't thank him enough for giving me a car that works so great! This Professional Plating Triple X Chassis was on rails tonight!" Thiel expressed in his interview in victory lane.

Saturday was another busy day as they had to prepare for racing action at the Plymouth Dirt Track. Scotty drew a 21 pill which set him to start third in the fourth heat race event. He slept a little bit on the start and fell back to the fourth position and could not make the ground back up and took a fourth place finish. Thiel was forced to run the B-Main event where he started outside pole. He would go on to take the win in that race and a 17th place starting spot. The track was really narrow the entire night and the cushion was getting built up all night as well. Passing was even more difficult and the opportunity to make passes were limited. Scotty tried all he could to move up through the field but was unable to. Things were getting extremely racey and cars were starting to bounce off one another. With 10 laps to go, Scotty pulled off the track. He was still at the back of the field and figured it was not worth it to keep racing and take the high risk of tearing his car up for one more position that paid the same. It was a bummer night but overall was the right decision.

It was an overall excellent week for the #64 Professional Plating Inc Sprint car. It felt good to finally get the first win under the belt for the year. It was a motivational key for the entire team. This week's racing action brings the team to the Cedar County Fairgrounds in Tipton, IA on Thursday night with the Sprint Invaders. Followed by Manitowoc County Expo Speedway on Friday night and the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday night!
