Scotty Thiel - Rough Weekend on the Road
After a 7.5 hour drive to Rock Rapids, Iowa, the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team pulled into Rapids Speedway for the 360 Winged Sprint Special. Scotty picked a 7 pill which set him to start on the pole of the third heat race. The track was in prime condition and after the green flag dropped, Thiel took the lead and never looked back. He would take home the checkered flag and on the redraw picked a 5th place starting spot in the night's 25 lap A-Main event.
At the start of the A-Main, Thiel worked the inside groove and would take over the third position in only a few short laps. Green flag laps were fairly short throughout the night as the track began to slick off and cautions would come out for spinning cars. Scotty held the third position for 15 laps and lost one spot after a restart. With 18 laps in, the car began to spit and sputter and forced Thiel to pull in the infield. Hardly any fuel was left in the car due to the large amounts of caution laps that took place. Scotty was not the only car that ran out of fuel that night, several other cars joined him in the infield.
The crew loaded up and plugged in Ogilvie, Minnesota on the GPS and set sail for a 4.5 hour night ride. They pulled into the hotel at 5:15AM, took a short nap, and were back up early to prepare the car for the UMSS event at Ogilvie Raceway. Scotty drew a 6 pill which set him to start on the pole again of the second heat race event. Thiel took the lead and would take the checkered flag and a 5th place starting spot in the Challenge Race.
The crew prepared the car as the track was getting very slick throughout the night. Scotty started 5th in the challenge race and within the first lap, was up to the 3rd position and took over 2nd on lap 4. A caution flag came out and on the restart, Scotty put a huge slider on the lead car and took over the lead. He would then go to take the checkered flag once again and a 4th place starting spot in the A-Main event.
After the outside pole car jumped the start, Scotty advanced to the outside pole position for the second attempt at the green flag. The green flag flew and Thiel would fall into the second position. On lap three, he would make a slide job on the leader and take over the lead. He held the lead for only two laps and would get passed in turn three. Scotty settled back in second and on lap six, got in the slop that was on the outside of the track, hit the outside concrete wall, and rolled over several times. That would retire Thiel from the race. "We had a really fast car all night, won every race but the mains this weekend. It's a shame we went all this way for a result like this. Hopefully we can regroup and pull off a win in the near future!" Thiel stated after the event.
It was a rough weekend on the road for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team. However, they learned a lot at both tracks and will be planning on making the trip on July 6th to Rapids Speedway for the ASCS National event. The team will be back home in Wisconsin this weekend racing at Manitowoc on Friday night and Plymouth on Saturday night.
