Top 5 Top 10 Weekend for Thiel
Scotty Thiel and the #64 STM Sprint car made a positive momentum swing this past weekend, locking in a top 10 finish at the Manitowoc County Speedway and a top 5 finish at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI. Even though it was not the best results in the world, it was still a boost for the entire team after struggling early on in the season with a variety of issues.
Thiel drew a 26 pill Friday night and started on the inside second row of the heat race event. After going to green flag action, Scotty maintained that third place position for the entire ten laps and would secure a 8th place starting spot in the night's 30 lap A-Main event.
It was a tricky track at the start of the race and Thiel worked both the high side and the low side for several laps. A few cautions played a factor over the course of 30 laps and Thiel was managing to move up in the running order. He managed to get up to the fourth position but then got penalized to initally jumping the previous restart. The rule for jumping a restart is the competitor loses two track positions but after getting lined back up, Thiel lost four positions. At the end of 30 laps, Scotty would bring home an eighth place finish. Afterwards, Thiel talked with the officials to discuss the car position matters and the scorers had mention he did not actually pass two of the cars, which in every fans point of view, Thiel had passed those cars and had them past for several laps.
Saturday night brought the team to the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI. Scotty drew a 17 pill which set him to start inside of the second row in the heat race event. At the drop of the green flag, Thiel flew down into turn one, got inside of the second place car, made it three wide going down the backstretch, and took the lead going into turn three. After that, Thiel never looked back and took home the checkered flag, along with a fifth place starting position in the night's 25 lap A-Main event.
At the start of the A-main, Thiel worked the low line and shot into the second position going down the back stretch. As the top line was getting faster, Scotty lost a few spots but jumped up to the top and held on to the fourth position. He was charging forward and began to get into heavy lap traffic until a caution came out on lap 18 for a car that spun. Thiel would restart in the third position and after going green flag racing again, the red came out going into turn one. After a decent delay took place, the field got lined back up and Scotty was still in the third position. There was a total five lapped cars in between the leader and Thiel. Scotty new it was going to be tough to get up to the front in only seven laps. The green flew and Thiel did what he could to get around the lapped cars but was only able to take home a third place finish for the night. It was a good night for the STM crew as they locked in another top 5 finish. Scotty was really happy with the car and knew if there wasn't all the lap cars in the way on the restart, they had a shot at winning.
It was a solid weekend of racing for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team. The crew will be extra busy this week preparing their ASCS Car and getting ready to hit the road this coming weekend. The team will be heading off to Rapids Speedway in Rock Rapids, IA on Friday night and then going to Ogilvie, MN on Saturday night.
