Bad Luck Burden Continues
The Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 Sprint Car team were only able to get one night of racing in this past Memorial Day Weekend. Mother nature took out their chances on Friday night after the heat race events, and Saturday after hot laps were completed. The crew then got their ASCS car prepared and headed to the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI with the IRA Sprint Car series.
Scotty drew a #1 pill and was the first qualifier on the track for the night. He would lay down a lap of 11.668 and a speed of 102.743MPH. That time was good enough for the 12th position, and would place him to start outside second row for the heat race. At the drop of the green, Thiel flew to the outside and charge hard to the leaders. When coming into turn three and four, he slid up the track and pushed the limits by hitting the outside wall coming out of turn four, pulled a huge wheelstand, and managed to hold on to the car. On the landing, he blew out a right front tire and was forced to pull off the track. The crew got the car repaired and prepared it for the 15 lap B-Main event. Scotty would start outside second row in that race. A caution came out early and on the restart, Thiel flew up to the high side and made a two car pass. He was all over the leader. They approached lap traffic and Thiel got pinched on the bottom and lost one position. There were only a few laps left and Scotty would come home with a third place finish and a 19th place starting spot for the Bumper to Bumper 30 lap A-Main event.
On the first lap of the race, a red flag came out and Scotty's oil gauge was showing low oil pressure. He got pushed to the work area and the crew did not find anything wrong. They had Scotty push back off and the oil pressure was fine. The angle of the car during the red caused the oil to not fully circulate. Thiel would tag the rear of the field on the restart. With only four or five laps in, Thiel was picking off car after car, but as he entered into turn one, a car started to push up towards the high side where he was running, causing him to jump the cushion and smacked the wall. After smacking the wall, the car launched up on the fench and when over. It wasn't a bad flip but wrecked plenty of things on the car and forced Thiel to take yet another DNF for the season. The damages were mostly bolt on parts.
The crew will be working hard to put the ASCS car back together along with preparing the MSA car for this weekend's racing action. They will be returning to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway Friday night and at the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday night.
