Is Thiel's Luck Starting to Change?
The last two visits to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway have not been what the Scott Thiel Motorsports team anticipated. On May 11th, Thiel was leading the A-Main event until lap 15 when a fueling issue caused oil to push out of the breather on the motor, forcing Scotty to pull into the infield. On May 18th, Thiel started 5th in the A, charged up to the second position, until only a few laps to go when the motor locked up and broke the rear end.
The team kept on saying when is it enough with all this bad luck? Well the luck changed in the positive direction after Saturday night. The team acquired a motor to use from Tommy Mueller and Mueller Sales and Service to race at the Plymouth Dirt Track with MSA Car. They had an option to go race with the ASCS car, but with the weather being a threat in those areas, they decided to take the offer and go race at Plymouth.
Scotty drew a 40 pill which set him to start 6th in the heat race event. After going green flag racing, Scotty charged up through the field and was in the third position only a few laps in. After 10 laps, Thiel would come home in third and earn a ninth place starting spot for the nights 25 lap A-Main event.
It was a rough start to the A-Main as the outside pole sitter began to flip going down the front stretch collecting several cars. Thiel managed to sneak away from that though! After returning back to green, Scotty began to slowly pick off several cars. There were only a few cautions during the course of the race which bunched the lead cars back together. After charging hard on the last restart, Thiel was all over the third and fourth place cars but was unable to make a pass before the finish line and took home a fifth place finish. "Man, it feels good to finally finish one without any issues!" Thiel stated after the race.
It was a positive motivator for the entire team. Coming home with a top 5 finish is nothing to be ashamed of. Scotty and the crew will be preparing for three nights of racing this coming Memorial Day weekend. Friday night they will make another attempt at the Manitowoc County Speedway, Saturday return to the Plymouth Dirt Track, and on Sunday make another appearance at 141 Speedway with the IRA 410 outlaw sprints!
