STM Makes First Race Trip of 2012
The 2012 Scott Thiel Motorsports team was scheduled to race with the ASCS Warrior region this past weekend in Missouri. With the potential threat of weather, the team decided to stay back and hope that the weather changed for Saturday April 14th for the season opener of the Sprint Invader Series at 34 Raceway in Burlington, IA. The threat of rain was around 30%, so the team loaded up and hit the road at 10:30am. They pulled into the track a little after 4pm and prepared for their first race of 2012. Scotty drew a 33 pill which set him to start 5th in the first heat race. At the drop of the green, Scotty began to pick of several cars. Coming into turn 3, Thiel was battling for the second position, until the caution flew and a complete restart was asked. The green flew again, but Scotty spun the tires a bit and fell back to the seventh spot. In only 5 short laps, Thiel was in fourth and on a mission. He caught the third place car but incountered some lap traffic. With only two laps to go, Thiel wasn't able to make the pass for third and managed a fourth place position and a 13th starting position for the nights A-main event.
The radar was not looking good as severe weather was approaching fast. The B-main cars were pushed off on the track and were able to complete two laps until a caution came out for the rain. The STM crew began to load up the trailer as the rain came down harder and harder. The track eventually called the show and rescheduled the remaining portion on July 3rd, along with a complete new show afterwards.
Overall, it was a great time for the STM team. Scotty was able to turn some laps and get a feel for the 2012 Professional Plating Inc Triple X Chassis and Gaerte Engine powered car. The team will focus on this coming weekend which will either be in Elko, MN with the Upper Midwest Sprint Series or in Eagle, NE with the ASCS Midwest tour.
