Decent 3 Day Race weekend for STM

After preparing the car all week long, the STM crew heading to the Manitowoc Speedway on Friday July 30th. This was their first night for the upcoming 7 day speedweek. Scotty drew a 15 pill which set him to start inside second row for the heat race. It was a charge going into turn one but Scotty managed to sustain his 3rd place starting spot and hold that for the rest of the heat race event. Thiel would then start in the 13th starting spot for the A-main. The track became very rough going into turn one which messed a lot of people up in the first few laps and cause a few red flags. After getting going again, Scotty lost a few spots but managed to come away with an 11th place finish.

Saturday brought the STM crew to the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgounds. Scotty drew a 32 pill which set him to start inside third row for the heat race. The track was very tacky and made for extremely fast racing. Scotty tried all he could to get around the narrow grooved track but managed to finish 6th. He would then start 4th for the B-main event. At the start, Scotty got a good jump and took over the third spot and stayed their for the remaining part of the race. That finish would set Scotty to start in the 19th spot for the A-main. The track became tackier and harder to pass as the night went on, so it was going to be difficult to move forward, starting in the rear of the field. Many reds and yellows were waving early on in the race and with in 5 laps racing, Scotty had ran out of tearoffs. This made it extremely difficult for Scotty, as he had to wipe and scrap mud off of his shield and race the car at the same time. He managed to use his gloves to the fullest and make the shield as clean as he could and also finish in the 13th position.

The STM guys loaded up right after the A-main on saturday to get back to the shop, and get the car prepared for the third night of racing which would be a 5 hour haul to Peoria, Illinois with the Sprint Invader series. The crew stayed up for the majority of the night and hit the road at 11AM. Truck problems hit the STM rig again but the problem was that they were still 2 to 3 hours away from Peoria. Limping the truck and trailer the rest of the way, they got into the pits at 6:05PM. Just a little late, but managed to get the car unloaded, set-up, and made the 6:30 hotlap session. Scotty got a little feeling for the track and made a few changes before the heat race. Thiel started 7th in the heat race and finished in the 5th spot. Knowing that with one more lap he probably could of made the 4th and final transfer spot to the A-main. Running the B-main gave Scotty a little more track time which wasnt a bad thing at all. He started in the 4th spot and quickly charged into the second position on the first lap. There was a restart with 3 laps to go and Scotty decided it was time to make a move on the leader. At the green, Scotty dove into turns one and two, making the slide job on the leader. The 1m car then crossed Thiel over going into three, but then Scotty crossed the 1m going out of turn 4. It was a heated battle going to the checkerd, but the 1m caught a little bit coming out of turns 3 and 4, sneeking out the win by a few feet. The crew made a few adjustments and prepared the car for the 25 lap Kitchen Cooked Summer Shootout A-main event. Scotty started in the 18th position. At the start it was a fight to get to the bottom of the track but Thiel patiently waited for the right opportunity and snuck inside of cars lap after lap. It was a tough battle to get around all ASCS 360 guys with the MSA steel 360, but Thiel made it would and rounded out with a 9th place finish. Getting a top 10 at an ASCS motor ruled race was not bad at all. The STM guys were really happy with the outcome of the night.
