Thiel bests IRA field at Cedar Lake, maintains IRA championship lead heading into Sycamore

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (May 6, 2024) - It was an elbows-up evening in the Badger State for “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel and Team 73, not only concluding their visit to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin, still in control of the IRA Outlaw Sprint Series championship point standings, but the Sheboygan-based open wheel aces earned a victory in the process, kicking off Saturday’s Spring Open Wheel Spectacular from the outside of row four; Big Wheel made his winning move with just two circuits remaining.

Almost perfect, Thiel’s visit to Cedar Lake Speedway also included the third-fastest time in qualifying time trials, as well as a runner-up performance during heat race competition.

Redemption in some respect, Thiel’s victory comes in just the second IRA event of the season, launching the year with a runner-up performance to Tim Estenson at Beaver Dam Raceway. The back-to-back podium outcomes has allowed Thiel to pad his 2024 IRA championship chase, and he will enter the upcoming start in Sycamore, Illinois, with a 23-point gap.

“That was fun,” Thiel, ace of the Gibbsville Cheese, Professional Plating Inc, Ludwig & Sons Trucking, Total Restoration Services, Scott Thiel Builders, Lift Pro, Schmidts Landscaping, Complete Water, No. 73 sprint car, stated. “A huge shoutout to this team. We definitely had our challenges this year, but this really makes up for the struggle and the frustration. We have a ton of great supporters behind this team this year and to get them a win is a special feeling. The first one is always the hardest to get, so we’ll work to keep this momentum going and hopefully get a second much sooner than later.”

ON DECK:
Scotty Thiel and Team 73 will continue their 2024 IRA Outlaw Sprint Series campaign with a visit to Sycamore Speedway in Sycamore, Illinois, on Saturday, May 11. In addition to IRA competition, Thiel will join High Limit Racing at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Friday, May 10, as well as Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Indiana, on Monday, May 13.
