Scotty Thiel - Jackson Nationals Recap

Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports team set out to compete at the 40th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals this past week at the Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, MN. This $40,000 to win, $3000 to start event was circled on the calendar from the beginning of the year for the team. A long three day format would start on Thursday, which was rained out and pushed to Friday and a two race event on Saturday. After a strong performance early on Friday the team was confident they would be able to compete well the rest of the weekend. Some issue would transpire as the weekend went on but still was an overall solid weekend with some the of best in the business.

42 cars signed into Jackson on Friday night. Scotty was the fourth car out in the first flight of qualifying on a super fast Jackson Motorplex. He would end up seventh quick in his flight and also seventh quick overall of the 42 cars who qualified. That would line him up fourth in the heat race event. Top five would transfer into the nights A-main event. The field took the green and Thiel charged into turn one. He pulled along side for the third position but drifted up coming out of two and fell back to fifth. He held his ground in fifth and would finish there to lock himself into the nights 30 lap main event. The track for the main event was still super tacky and fast. Scotty would start in the 17th position. The field took the green and Thiel knew in the first lap it was going to be a challenge after pulling a bunch of tear offs. A few cautions came out early which would reset the field and make it very tough on the starts to keep the shield clean. With about eight laps completed, Thiel pulled a few too many tear offs and once and was completely out. The dirt was just still so sticky that even wiping the mud off the shield was not possible and he was forced to stop and get out of the race. "I never imagined this staying this tacky this late but it sure did. It made it a challenge for sure and we learned a lesson about having some spare tear offs or helmet ready in the work area." Scotty laughed. "We showed some good speed all night. Qualifying went better than I thought and we held our own all night. I think we could of had a good finish with them tonight but we'll get after it tomorrow."

Saturday started early in the afternoon with making up Thursdays portion of the program. 39 cars were in attendance all night. Thiel drew deep for qualifying and the track backed up time wise very quick. He ended up starting eighth in the heat race event. The team made some adjustments and Scotty was still able to drive up to the sixth position but would be one spot short of the main event. He would have to come through the Last Chance Showdown which is lined up from qualifying which placed Thiel to start 16th. The track was very slick to start that race off and would eventually take rubber making passing even more difficult from that far back. Scotty drove up to 12th place in the LCS but would not make the final event for that part of the program.

Both "preliminary nights" were all points related and would set the field for Saturday evening's program. Scotty was 26th in combined points after the two programs. That would place him to start sixth in the heat race event. The top four cars would get locked into the nights 40 lap, $40,000 to win, event. The field took the green and Scotty charged the top side of the track and pulled along side of the fourth place running car. He battled for a lap and then began to fall back a little as some issues occurred with the engine. He would fall back to the sixth position and be forced to come through the last chance race again. Thiel would go on to start seventh in the Last Chance Showdown. The crew tried to make some adjustments to get the issues fixed and went out for the LCS. On the start of the race, the car stumbled a little and Scotty did not get a great start. He drove for a few laps and decided to pull off the racing surface which would ultimately end the Jackson Nationals for him and the team. "Disappointing way to end the weekend but we have some issues that we need to get fixed with the car. We showed speed with these guys and proved to ourselves we can run with them." Scotty mentioned after the weekend.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
