Scotty Thiel – Runner Up at Wilmot
Saturday night brought the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI with the IRA Sprint Car Series. After coming off a decent run at Beaver Dam the week before, Thiel continued on his charge early in the night with a quick lap time in qualifying and followed that up with a heat race win. Thiel would go on to start the night in the second position and gave a solid run at the lead but fell short at the end to complete the night with a second place finish.
28 cars signed into Wilmot Raceway Saturday night with the IRA. Scotty drew a number six pill which placed him to go out fifth in the qualifying order. He put down a 12.940 lap time which was Quick Time for the night and the only driver to enter into the 12 second bracket that night. That placed him to start fourth in the heat race event after the inversion. The fourth place starting position didn’t hold Thiel back at all as he would charge up to the second position early on in the heat race and charge after the leader. With only three laps to go, Scotty slid his way into the lead out of turn four and never look back, capturing the heat race victory and a spot in the top ten redraw. This week the redraw went a lot better as Scotty would draw the number two starting spot for the nights 30 lap A-main event. The field took the green flag for the A-main. Thiel settled into the second spot early in the race and would slide for the lead on lap six. He held the lead for a couple of laps and would lose it after jumping the cushion in turn one. He fought back all race long but would get held up by some lap traffic that gave the leader some distance from Thiel. With a late race charge, Scotty would close the gap on the leader but was unable to make a pass for the lead and would settle at the finish line in the second position. “I’m just a little bummed out at myself for not driving good in traffic. My guys gave me a great race car all night. We were the fastest car out here all night long. We gave it a good effort at the end but fell short. Lap traffic was tough tonight and made it tough to get by. Just frustrating when you know you have a winning car but messed up in some spots that ultimately gave it away. We’ll regroup and get after it next week.” Stated Thiel after the night.
Next up on tap was originally Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, MN but heavy rains and more rain scheduled in the forecast has cancelled that event for Friday. The team will now take off this weekend and prepare for the upcoming Arctic Cat Allstar Circuit of Champions events that will take place on May 19th at Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI and on May 20th at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI.

Torsion Bar Rate:
