Scott Thiel Motorsports 2016 Year in Review

Mother Nature would win the final event of the 2016 Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series this past Saturday evening as the bad weather would force the cancellation at Dodge County Speedway in Beaver Dam, WI. This would end the season for the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team as they had a very small chance at a Championship title if they could have raced. However, a long and tough season would place them second in the overall IRA point standings and cap off the season with three wins, 14 top five finishes and 20 top ten finishes.

It was a rollercoaster of a year for the STM #64. The team battled with poor luck early on in the season when Scotty was racing in the top five and bad situations would occur. Starting off the season opener running in the top three and Scotty would spin to avoid a dirt slide job. The bad luck would continue on to beaver dam when Scotty was battling for the lead when a right rear wheel broke. Scotty and the team finally overcame adversity when they picked off an early win at Angell Park Speedway on May 22nd. The momentum continued as Scotty would stay on the podium the next few races and picked up a pair of wins over Father’s Day weekend starting at Plymouth Dirt Track and followed that up with another victory again at Angell Park Speedway. The team was in the IRA points lead and took a commanding lead. The bad luck streak began again in July where two big crashes would damper their points lead. Scotty still however finished in the top five several times in the month of July. August was the month where the team struggled and bad luck continued. It started the first weekend when Scotty was battling for the lead when a nozzle line came off and forced a DNF on the night. That followed up with a spin out at Wilmot Raceway running in the top five. A horrific crash at Angell Park Speedway with the World of Outlaws would destroy the car and that followed up by two engines expiring in the same night the follow week. The month of September was better for the team as Scotty finished in the top five in four out of five races and finished sixth in the other event. It was not enough however to capture the points championship. A mere 86 points would separate the team from taking their first ever championship.

“This season had many ups and downs but it was still a positive year for everyone involved. We brought on our new crew guy Mike who did fantastic for us all year long. Between him, my dad and myself, we built up a strong team that was capable of winning many races. We did win three but there were plenty more that we had a good chance at if I would have taken a chance or just had some luck. A spinout here and a nozzle line falling off there, just a few things that caused several less wins on our year. We never looked at the points much and we were having a lot of fun early on after winning those three events. The bad luck struck us several times over the season and some of the streaks hurt. Six total DNF’s for the year is something that frustrated me overall. Without those, a championship would have been a very realistic view for us. You have to take the good with the bad but it is just tough for everyone involved when bad luck comes around. I have learned from some of those situations that I will work on for next year. Overall, this season was a memorable one, they all are really, but winning three IRA shows and finishing second in points is actually really special. I cannot thank everyone enough who is a part of this organization. From our marketing partners to my crew help and family, they are what make this team operate and everyone’s support is greatly appreciated. I can’t wait to see what next year will bring!” Scotty stated after talking about the year in review.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
