Scotty Thiel – Tough Luck Weekend

After a weekend off of racing due to the Knoxville Nationals, the Scott Thiel Motorsports team prepared for a triple header weekend with the IRA Series. The first two nights were scheduled for Wilmot Raceway and they would follow those events up with the annual CornFest at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI which was a last minute switch to be a World of Outlaw co-sanctioned event with the IRA. Scotty struggled with break issues Friday at Wilmot which resulted in a 17th place finish but would come out of that slump on Saturday with a solid top ten finish with a 6th place performance. Sunday started out well for the team but a late race incident would damper the entire weekend as Scotty crashed hard into the turn four wall.

Friday night at Wilmot set for night number one of the weekend for the STM team. Scotty drew a 4 pill which placed 4th out in qualifying. After a 13.887 lap time, that was quick enough for 9th overall out of the 31 cars in attendance. Scotty would then start 4th in the heat race event and he charged his way up to a second place performance in the ten lap event. That would luckily place him into the night’s redraw event which sets the first five rows of the A-main event. Thiel would go on to start 10th in the nights’ 30 lap main event. As the field took the green, Scotty worked the low groove and moved up several positons in the first few laps. He continued to work the bottom side of the track but began to have brake issues as the race went on. A few laps later, he lost the brakes coming into turn three and would spin out as he tried to get the car to slow down to make the corner. He would have to tag the rear of the field and that made things extremely difficult. The track conditions became slick and passing went away. Thiel would end up finishing 17th when the checkered flag flew.

The crew worked hard during the night and next morning to prepare for the second night at Wilmot Raceway. Scotty drew a 13 pill which placed him 7th out of 32 cars overall. Scotty put down a 15.037 lap time which was 4th quick overall! He would start sixth in the heat race event. The field took the green and Scotty charged up to the top side of the track. The track was very wide and slick which made Thiel fall back several positions but he quickly regained some momentum in the next few laps and worked his way up to a 4th place finish after 10 laps of green flag action. That would lock him into the night’s redraw event where he would go on to start the 36 Lap Roger Iles Memorial event in the 5th starting position. The field took the green and Scotty worked the bottom side of the track for the first few laps. He worked his way up to the third position before the half way point of the event and maintained his ground. Several late race cautions bunched the field back up and made for a battle with the top five positions. Scotty started to work the top groove and fell back a few spots after the last caution came out. He tried to make it work up top but had to change his line back to the bottom side as he fell back to the sixth position. After 36 laps of green flag action was completed, Scotty would end up crossing the finish line in sixth. “It was a respectable night for us tonight. We finally finished for one and finished decent. I lost some grip towards the end of the race and the car faded away but still held on.” Mentioned Scotty after the event.

The final night of the triple header weekend for the STM team occurred at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI for the CornFest event which was switched to a co-sanctioned event with the World of Outlaws and the IRA Series. 37 cars were on hand, Scotty went out 20th for qualifying. He would go on to put down a 12.195 lap time which was 13th quick overall. That placed him to start fourth in the ten lap heat race event. When the field took the green, Scotty tried to work the middle groove early on but lost a few spots. He moved up the track and began to charge his way back forward and would end up finishing the 10 lap heat race event in the fifth and final transfer position for the night’s 40 lap Main event. Scotty would go on to start the main event in the 17th position. On the start of the race, Thiel charged up in the inside of the track and moved up several position in turn one. That start was called back which did not work out well for Thiel on the next attempt. He didn’t gain as much ground as he did earlier and held on to his position. He worked the bottom side for a few laps and then moved up the track and built up his momentum. With the field just shy of half way, Scotty continued to work the high groove before disaster struck. Thiel entered turn four and jumped the cushion which sent the front end of the car straight into the outside wall. He hit the wall very hard and the car was then thrown out into the middle of the track right in front of the leaders. Thankfully, nobody clipped Scotty as he came to a stop in the middle of the track. Scotty got out of the car under his own power but was shaken up. That would end the night for the team as they observed a very torn up race car back at the trailer. “This was one of the hardest hits I’ve taken in my racing career. I just would like to thank all of the great safety manufactures for keeping me safe inside of that thing. I’m just disappointed for everyone involved in this operation. Our luck has been just horrible lately.” Scotty would later on mention.

The team will be rebuilding this coming week to prepare for the upcoming weekend which sends them south to LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, IL for the Bill Waite Memorial $5,000 to WIN event on Saturday! They will then follow up that event with another visit to Angell Park Speedway on Sunday.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
