Scotty Thiel – Wilmot Runner Up

The IRA Sprint Car Series lead the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team and driver Scotty Thiel south to Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI. After qualifying 5th overall, Thiel charged his way from fifth to capture the heat race victory and then would be the runner up in the 30 lap main event after starting fourth. It was another solid top three effort by the team.

Scotty drew a 31 pill which placed him to go out 11th in the qualifying order. After laying down an 11.525 lap time, it was 5th quick overall out of the 27 cars in attendance. That placed Thiel to start fifth in the heat race event. The field took the green and Scotty worked the low line of the track. He launched into the third position on the first lap going down the back stretch. He battled for the second position for the next few laps and then he jumped up to the high groove and began to build up his momentum. The white flag flew and Scotty charged around the top in turns one and two. He had a big run coming down the back stretch and dove down to the bottom in turn three and would make the car stick coming off of turn four and pulled off the heat race win. That would secure him for the night’s redraw where Scotty would be placed to start in the fourth position in the 30 lap A-main event.

The field took the green flag for the 30 lap A-main event. Scotty worked the middle groove early on and struggled a little bit with the handling of the car as he fell back to the fifth spot in the first few laps. Several early cautions reset the field and Scotty began to use that to his advantage on the restarts as he started moving back forward. He found himself up to the third position until another caution came out as the leader bicycled into turn three and would be done for the night. That advanced Thiel up to the second position on the restart. The field went back to green flag action and Scotty began to apply pressure to the leader. Lap traffic started to become a factor but Scotty never let the leader out of his sight. Right on the rear bumper of the leader, Scotty prepared to make his move for the top spot before a caution came out on lap 22. The field went back to green with 8 laps left and Scotty lost a little ground after the first lap. He regrouped himself and began to reel the leader back in. Lap traffic approached with just two laps to go and Scotty started to charge closer and closer but would fall short and cross the finish line in the second position. “It was a solid night for this team. We worked pretty hard to figure out what to do with this car tonight. The track was pretty tricky early on. I thought we had a good shot at taking the lead over but that late caution didn’t help us. The car faded away at the end just a little bit and we couldn’t take off that well. Lap traffic came a couple laps too late to try to take over the lead. All in all it was a great night for us but I really thought we had a chance at victory lane.” Mentioned Thiel after the event.

Sunday nights racing action was cancelled due to heavy rains early at Sun Prairie.

Next on tap for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team is this coming Friday night at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI and then Saturday night at Eagle Valley Raceway in Jim Falls, WI. Both events are sanctioned with the IRA.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE).
