Scotty Thiel – Problems at Plymouth
A cold night set the Scott Thiel Motorsports team at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds for the final night of racing at the Plymouth Dirt Track for 2014 and the fourth last stop for the IRA 410 Sprint Series. Scotty charged forward in the main before a flat tire ended his battle and sent him back to the rear of the field with only a few laps left and faced him with a 14th place finish.
After a late draw in qualifying, Scotty still managed to lay down a 12.479 lap time which was 14th quick overall for the night. That placed Thiel to start on the outside front row of the heat race event. A little bobble on the start of the heat cost Scotty some ground going into turn one. He settled into the second position and would maintain that spot for all ten laps of the heat. It was solid finish which placed him into the main but missed the invert due to a mid-pack qualifying attempt. Thiel would start out in the 16th position for the night’s 27 lap Filskov Memorial A-main event.
Scotty knew that the slick track conditions would make for tough passing but the team set the car up to his liking as he began to charge forward right away as the green flag dropped for the A-main event. He worked the high side of the track where not too many cars were daring to go over the course of the race. In just a few laps, Thiel already found himself inside the top 10 and was still charging. With the halfway mark approaching, Scotty was nearing the top 5 of the field. He began to lose momentum and was not able to charge off the corner as much in the next few laps. Scotty started to feel the car transfer hard on the right rear and knew that a flat tire was the problem. A yellow came out as Thiel stopped in turn four and the crew went to work as the car was pushed into the work area. They were able to get the tire changed and sent Thiel back out on the track. All of the cars that Scotty had just passed would have to be accomplished yet again but this time in a shorter time period. The field went back to green flag action and Scotty continued his charge but was unable to gain all the ground he previously did. With only 3 laps to go he battled between the 12th and 14th place position and crossed the line after 27 laps of green flag action in the 12th spot. IRA officials later determined that Scotty would be penalized two positions for passing before the cone after going back to green. The official finish for Thiel would be 14th. “We struggled in qualifying as the track was two different elements. One and two was slick and three was just rough and choppy. The front row starting spot helped but missing the transfer set us back. We charged forward but nothing you can do when a tire goes down. Just disappointing for how well it was going at that point. We will just regroup and rebound next week.” Scotty mentioned after the night.
Next up on tap for the STM #64 team will be this coming Saturday night at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI.
