Scotty Thiel - Salvages Top 3 at Cedar Lake!
A five hour haul set the Scott Thiel Motorsports team off to the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI this past Saturday night. It was the annual Jerry Richert Memorial which hosted IRA 410 and UMSS 360 Sprint Cars. Scotty drew a 59 pill which set him to start sixth in the heat race event. After a few laps of battling for positions, Scotty worked his way up to the third spot and would go on to take the checkered flag. That allowed him an outside front row starting spot for the 10 lap Ultimate Sprint Challenge Race.
At the start of the challenge race, Thiel was able to get a great start and pulled into the early lead. The race went green for a few laps before a caution came out for a car slowing in turn three. Scotty brought the field back to green and would not look back. He took the checkered flag and after the invert, was given a sixth place starting spot for the nights A-Main event.
At the start of the A-main, Scotty tried to work the high side going into turn one but would lose a few positions and had his work cut out for him to regain those spots. A few laps were completed before a car spun going down the back stretch causing the field to scatter in order to avoid the car. Scotty was up towards the outside wall when the situation occurred and go into the back of another car which bent the lower radius rod and the front axle. No tires were flat and Scotty felt that he would be able to continue to race the car how it was. The field went back to green and it took a lap for Scotty to adjust to the car since the steering was a lot quicker. He managed to pass for the fourth spot and was charging forward for the third spot. A few laps went by and going into turn one, a car spun which collected two others and at the last minute, Thiel would get caught up in the mess but came out of it only with heavy right side wing damage. The crew was in the infield during the red flag and said that the wing is not going to be an issue. Scotty was then able to restart in the third spot and finish the remaining laps of the event. The field took the green again and Scotty tried all he could to get into the second spot but would fall short and come home with a third place finish.
"Little frustrated at the overall finish of the night. We had a really fast car all night long but I guess looking at the race as a whole, we could have had a pile of mess like some of the others. It was a handful for me to drive and I'm really not sure how I ended up third with our car all mangled together. But we'll take it, we can load it in the trailer which is the main thing!" Scotty expressed after the main.
It was a battle all night long for the STM team. Fighting hard to regain positions and mostly avoiding all the wrecks that occurred during the night. The car has some damage that is minor and overall is in one piece. The team will be taking a break with their ascs car now for several weeks as they will be getting the engine refreshed before they go to the Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, AR at the end of October. Next stop on the schedule will be this Saturday at the Plymouth Dirt Track.
