Scotty Thiel – Manitowoc & Wilmot Recap

Friday May 6th set the return to Manitowoc Speedway for the Manitowoc Mayhem event presented by STM’s own Scotty Thiel and his SixFour Promotions team. The Bumper to Bumper IRA sprint car series kicked off the final season of Manitowoc Speedway and it was a huge turnout! Things were going well for Thiel early in the night but throttle issues in the main event caused him to lose several spots in the main event. The team travelled south to Wilmot Raceway on Saturday night and Scotty had to do some chasing but managed to get his first hard charger of the season by advancing 13 positions in the main event.

30 cars signed into the pits at Manitowoc Speedway on Friday night. Scotty would be the 18th car out for qualifying. He laid down a 13.134 lap time which was 12th quick overall. That would go on to place him to start third in the heat race event. The field took the green and Scotty fed the bottom all race long and would battle for the lead for the first few laps. Patience’s was the key factor to the bottom groove and Thiel showcased that well as he took over the lead at the half way marker and never looked back. After 10 laps of green flag action, Thiel would take home the heat race victory and advanced him into the night’s redraw which would allow him to start in the top 10 of the A-main event. During the redraw session, the invert was picked and it placed Scotty to start on the pole of the 30 lap A-main event. The 24 car field saluted the fans by going four wide while fireworks launched into the air. Thiel set the pace down the backstretch and into turns three and four. He charged off turn four and the green flag flew. He continued to work the lower groove as he did in the heat race and it worked well as he led the first five laps of the main event. Lap traffic was approaching and Thiel had to switch up his line and would give up the lead. He battled back closely and it was a drag race off the corners for the top spot. Thiel eventually fell back to second as he moved up the track to avoid the lap cars. He charged back down to the bottom side of the track later on but would start to struggle with the throttle pedal sticking on him. Scotty was unable to have full throttle control and struggled to get back into a rhythm. After 30 laps of green flag action, Thiel would cross the finish line in the 6th position. “The car felt good early on in the race but my throttle started to stick a little bit as the race went on. I wasn’t able to control the car as much as I needed to do in order to run the bottom. After that happened I just wasn’t comfortable up top. Top 10 finish for the team but we were better than that. We’ll get it figured out and see what we can do tomorrow at Wilmot.” Stated Thiel after the event.

Saturday night the team headed south to Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI. 35 cars signed into the pits and Scotty would draw and be the 34th car out for qualifying. The team knew it was going to be tough going out that late as the track conditions began to dry out but that didn’t stop them from charging hard. Thiel would go on to lay down at 14.103 lap time which was 7th quick! Thiel would go on to start fifth in the heat race event. The field took the green and they charged into turn one. Scotty fell back to the sixth position coming out of turn two and began to search for a line that would work for him. He slipped into the fifth position a few laps later and would maintain that spot until a caution came out with only two laps to go. On the restart, Thiel shot down to the bottom side in turn one and would end up going back to the sixth position. He tried to charge his way back but fell short at the line and would end up sixth, forcing him to come through the B-main event. The crew made some changes and the B-main lineup took the track. Scotty would start in the third position. Only the top four cars would go on to transfer into the nights 30 lap main event. The field took the green and drove off into turn one. The dry track conditions began to make things a little difficult in regard to passing. Thiel got held up on the bottom and fell back to the fifth position. He began to charge on the high groove and would drive his way around into the fourth positon. He maintained that for the remaining laps and would go on to transfer into the night’s main event. Scotty would have to start in the final 24th position and knew it was going to be difficult to move forward. As the field took the green, Scotty charged through the middle of the track and made several passes for position in the first lap. A caution came out on lap two and Thiel found himself moved up into the 18th spot. The car felt great and he showcased it well as they returned to green flag action and he began to continue his march forward. Thiel worked several grooves all race long and would continue to pass cars. After 30 laps of green flag action, Scotty charged his way up to finish in the 11th position, earning the hard charger for the evening. “Even though we didn’t capture a top 10 tonight it still feels pretty good. The team worked hard to get this thing set up good and I felt really comfortable. Starting in the tail is very hard so moving up 13 spots is nothing to complain about. Hopefully we can get a little bit of luck back on our side early in the night and start up front next time.” Scotty mentioned.

Next on tap for the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team is this coming Friday at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN racing with the Craftsman World of Outlaws and then the team will follow that event up with a trip to Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI on Saturday night with the IRA Sprint Car Series.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
