Scotty Thiel – Solid Top 5 Weekend!

The Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team was scheduled for another 3-day race weekend but unfortunately Mother Nature captured another event. However, the team was able to race Friday night at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, WI where Scotty charged his way from 13th to 4th and then followed that up on Saturday at the Plymouth Dirt Track where Scotty started 8th, lead several laps but fell short and had to settle for a solid 2nd place finish.

Friday night at the Langlade County Fairgrounds, a little rain storm came through right before hot laps which caused for a greasy race track early on. Scotty drew a 33 pill which set him to 9th out of 25 cars to qualify. With the track still greasy in qualifying, Scotty wasn’t able to get the fastest time he wanted but settled for 12th quick overall. That would place him to start third in the heat race event. Little changes were made between qualifying and the heat as the track became better as the night went on and the moisture sank into the track. Passing was still difficult early on as the heat race went underway. Scotty charged into the first corner and settled in the third spot coming out of turn two. The top three cars stayed in line all eight laps long. Scotty was unable to make any more advances and would settle for a third place finish and would miss the A-main redraw by just a few cars. He would have to go on to start the 25 lap A-main from the 13th starting position. The field went green for the A-main event. Scotty charged his way through the middle turns one and two on the first lap and came down the backstretch in the eighth position. He continued to charge his way forward for the next 15 laps. On lap 14 of 25, Scotty cleared his way into the fifth position and had long way to catch the lead cars. Luckily, a caution came out on lap 15 which allowed Scotty to get bunched up closer to the top 4 cars. After returning to green flag action, Scotty continued his charge once again. He moved into the fourth position in the first lap. He made a little contact with the infield tire and lost some ground on the top three cars but was able to reel his way back into contention. With the white flag flying, Scotty tried all he could to gain ground but was two car length short at the line of finishing in third and settle for a solid 4th place finish. “We had a really great car tonight, honestly. We didn’t make a lot of changes as the track became better each time we were out. Qualifying didn’t work to our favor by going out early as it was a little greasy yet but we had to charge forward to make up for it and we did just that. This is a pretty solid top 5 finish.” Thiel mentioned after the main event.

The team drove back home on Friday night and prepared for Saturdays’ action at the Plymouth Dirt Track which is only 15 miles from the shop. Once they got to the track, Scotty drew a 5 pill which set him to be the first car out for the nights IRA qualifying. Scotty was one of only two cars to break into the 12 second bracket during qualifying but fell short of quick time by only one half of a tenth and would end up being 2nd quick out of 31 cars in attendance. That would place Thiel to start 6th in the heat race event. Tricky track conditions made for an interesting battle in all of the heat races. Scotty tried charging around the high side but dropped down low over the course of the ten lap event. He managed his way into the fifth spot early on and battled for the forth position but fell short at the end. Fifth place was still able to transfer Scotty into the nights 30 lap A-main event and with his 2nd place qualifying effort, it allowed him to be in the nights’ A-main redraw. Scotty drew the invert number and it placed him to start in the eighth position for the main event. After going to green flag action, Scotty charged around the top side of the track and began to make his charge forward early on. He passed several cars right away and began to battle his way around the top side. The lap cars began to play a factor just several laps into the main event. With 20 laps complete, Scotty worked his way down to the bottom and took over the lead coming out of turn four. He charged his way back up to the top side of the track and extended his lead. A caution came out on lap 26. After the restart, Scotty charged back up to the top side. He was managing his lead coming off the top side of the corners but a battle began for the top reigns. Thiel jumped the cushion in turn two with only two laps left and lost the lead going down the back stretch. With the white flag flying, Scotty tried all he could to regain the top spot but fell short at the end and had to settle for a 2nd place finish. “We got beat fair and square. Earlier I didn’t even know we were in the lead, I was trying to race the 85 I thought he was in the lead. I got around the 02 off of turn four and apparently I was in the lead,” Thiel said of his run to the front before the caution. “We didn’t need that caution, last night it helped a little bit. Tonight that restart didn’t help us. I was quick on the bottom early on getting around guys. I jumped the cushion a little bit in two and that costed us the race. Second place is good but not great. I don’t want to point’s race anymore; I’m going out for wins,” Thiel concluded after a disappointing letdown.

Sunday’s race event at the Seymour Speedway in Seymour, Wisconsin was cancelled due to rain.

Next up on tap for the #64 team will be this coming Friday night at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The last time the team traveled here, Scotty led 20 of 23 laps before running out of fuel.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
