Scotty Thiel – Closes out Rookie IRA Season with a Top 5 and Top 10
Heading into the final weekend of IRA racing for 2014, Scotty Thiel and the STM 64 team headed north to the Luxemburg Speedway for the first annual Battle by the Bay in Luxemburg, WI where the teams own Scotty Thiel promoted with SixFour Promotions. This was the first time the IRA series and 410 sprint cars has been at Luxemburg since 2005. An exciting night of racing led to an extremely fast track and Scotty would round out the night with a fourth place finish. Following Friday nights racing action, the team headed back south to the Dodge County Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI where Scotty struggled with an ill handling car but managed to hold on to a tenth place finish.
Friday September 26th was the first ever event for STM’s own Scotty Thiel and newly formed SixFour Promotions. The event brought the IRA 410 series to the Luxemburg Speedway for the first annual Battle by the Bay presented by Professional Plating Inc. This was the first time Luxemburg Speedway has seen 410 sprint cars since 2005 and the first for most of the current IRA drivers. Scotty went out 20th out of 28 cars and laid down an 11.322 lap time which was 8th quick for the night. That placed Thiel to start fourth in the heat race event. At the drop of the green, Scotty had a great start and launched up into the second spot but a quick caution came out and called for a complete restart. On the next attempt, Scotty bobbled off the line and raced his way into the fourth spot going into turn one. Not much passing took place on the extremely tacky track conditions and Thiel found himself crossing the finish line in the fourth spot after ten laps of green flag action.
The 30 lap A-main event was the final race of the night at the Battle by the Bay and Scotty would start out in the third position. The field went into the four wide salute for the fans and then prepared to take the green flag for the $2,500 to win event. The field came out of turn four and took the green. Scotty struggled early on to get a handle of the car and lost a few spots early on. He found a rhythm with ten laps in and began to move back forward through the field. Thiel charged his way up to the third position and a few late race cautions gave an opportunity to get to the lead. With five to go the field went back under green flag action, Scotty worked the low line and came out side by side with the second place car but was unable to make the pass and a caution came back out quickly after. With a green white checkered finish, Scotty wasn’t able to get a good jump and settled into the third position. With one lap to go it was a drag race to the finish and Scotty went low on the last lap but lost third by inches at the line and ended up in the fourth spot after 30 laps of green flag action was complete. “Our car was not great all feature long. I just held on to it for the most part. I had a good rhythm going around the half-way point but lost that went the late cautions came out.” Stated Thiel after the night.
Saturday night brought the team south to the Dodge County Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI for the final night of 2014 IRA Sprint Car action. Scotty went out 15th out of 30 cars and laid down a 17.080 lap time which was 7th quick overall. That placed Thiel to start out in the fourth spot in the heat race event. The field took the green for the heat race and they bunched up tight going into turn one. Scotty shuffled out to the high side and lost some ground but held the fifth spot coming out of turn two. The field maintained position for the remaining seven laps and Scotty would cross the line just inches away from fourth but would transfer into the main event with the fifth place finish. With a good qualifying effort, Scotty was in the A-main invert draw and would start out in the fifth position for the nights 25 lap A-main event. The field took the green coming out of turn four and Scotty was caught in the slick racing groove which did not allow and grip to get a good start. He shuffled back all the way to the tenth spot after coming out of turn two. It took several laps before the car came back around and was drivable for Thiel. He powered his way to the high side of the track and gained a lot of ground in the next few laps but passing was a struggle as the preferred groove was the high side. He tried to make the low line work but lost ground coming off the corner. After 25 laps of green flag action and no cautions, Scotty crossed the finish line in the tenth spot. “It was a rough night for us tonight. Qualifying went pretty well but that was about it. We struggled to get ahold of the track all night in the heat and the main. I’m not sure if we messed something up or if something was wrong with the car but we did not have any drive off the corners like we usually have at other tracks. Overall it was a solid year with the IRA. If we would have had a reliable motor program I think our results would have been better but a 5th in points is very acceptable for our first year racing with a 410.” Scotty stated after the night concluded.
That concluded the 2014 IRA Sprint Car Series and Scotty ended up 5th in overall series points with one win, 8 top 5 finishes and 16 top 10 finishes in 23 A-main starts.
Up next for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team is this coming weekend October 4th, at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana with the Sprint on Dirt series which a 360 event.
