Scotty Thiel: Picks Up First Career IRA Victory!
The three day northern swing with the IRA Sprint cars lead to a single night at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI where the STM #64 team, yet again, used their 360 engine to compete with the 410’s but this weekend had better success by winning the heat race and the 30 lap A-main event!
Scotty drew a 20 pill which set him to go out 11th for the qualifying order. Being down with horsepower on a decent race track was a disadvantage and placed him 16th quick out of 30 cars. That qualifying time, however, was good enough to place Thiel on the pole of the heat race event. After multiple attempts of getting the ten lap heat race underway the field finally went green. Scotty charged to the top side of the track going into turn one. He got to the cushion and never looked back. The checkered flag flew after ten laps were complete and Scotty recorded another heat race victory with the IRA and locked himself in the invert for the nights’ 30 lap A-main event. The top point setter drew a five pill which set Thiel to start on the outside front row of the main event.
The crew prepared the car for the top side of the track where all the cars were driving over the course of the evening. The field pushed off and prepared to get lined up into position. After giving the four wide salute to the fans, they got back in line and got ready to take the green flag. Coming out of turn four the wide roared down the front stretch. Scotty fell into the second spot going into turn one but was right on the leaders back bumper. He inched closer in turn three and set him up coming out of turn four. Charging hard down the front stretch, Thiel slid into the lead going into turn one. From there, he never looked back and began to pull away from the field. The slick conditions made the less horsepower car hook up good and he continued to stretch the lead out lap after lap. A yellow flew with ten laps completed and Thiel had a decent margin over second place with five lap cars in between. After going back to green flag action, Thiel did not back down and pulled away again. He encountered lap traffic only a few laps later and continued to work them over and maintain a decent lead. Two more cautions came out over the next 20 laps but that did not slow down Scotty as he was able to get solid restarts and pull away from the field. With only five laps remaining, the lap traffic began to get heavier and Thiel settled down knowing that passing was more difficult than ever. The track was slicker and the speeds slowed down a lot. He passed a few more cars and took the white flag. Coming down the backstretch and into turns three and four he held his composure and pumped his fist coming out of turn four to take his first career IRA sprint car victory, second of the 2014 season and his 18th career sprint car win!
“I didn’t think it would happen this quickly”, said an elated Thiel after bowing to the crowd from the top win of his car. “Man I tell you what, this team worked incredibly hard all week long”, noting the efforts of his crew. “I always told these guys we’re a big chaser, we start 20th and come up to fifth, I always come from behind. I knew if I could just start one of these things in the top five or so we could probably win the thing”, stated Thiel. “I know Bill (Balog) wasn’t here, but a win is a win, and we finally got one. It feels good for sure”, exclaimed Thiel.
The Scott Thiel Motorsports team is off this coming weekend as the annual Knoxville Nationals are taking place but the team will be back in action again August 15th and 16th at the Wilmot Raceway for two nights of action and follow it up on Sunday the 17th at Seymour Speedway.
