Scotty Thiel – Top 10 at Jackson Spring Nationals
A seven hour haul led the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to Jackson Speedway in Jackson, Minnesota on Thursday July 3rd for the $10,000 to win Spring Nationals event. This was the first time the team has been to this particular track and after 25 laps of green flag action, Scotty drove his way from a 14th place starting spot to a solid sixth place finish!
A 61 pill set Thiel to start 5th in the 8 lap heat race event. After a solid start, he took over the fourth spot going down the back stretch of the big half mile track. He ran down the third place car but with a small bobble with two laps to go, he lost some ground and would end up finishing in the fourth spot, missing the dash transfer by one car, but still made it into the big $10,000 to win A-main event.
Scotty prepared to tackle the big half mile track and had 25 laps to prove himself. He knew it was going to be hard to make up ground from starting in the 14th spot and had to charge right away. The field was given the command to get lined up into position and prepared to take the green flag. After coming out of turn four, the green flag flew. Scotty worked the bottom side of the track early on in the race and managed to move up a few spots right away. An early caution came out and Thiel was sitting in the 9th spot already. After returning back to green flag action, Scotty moved around and started to gain more ground on the leaders. He worked his way up to the sixth spot at the half way marker and made the pass for the fifth spot with only 8 laps to go. A late race red flag came out which gave the teams time to work on the cars but could not change tires. The crew made some small adjustments to the 64 car and added some fuel. After returning back to green flag action, Scotty moved up to the high side in turn one and lost a few spots going down the backstretch. He fell back to the seventh spot and with only two laps to go he moved back up to the sixth spot. After the checkered flag flew, Scotty would end up crossing the line in the sixth spot.
“I sure had a blast racing here at Jackson. Half miles can be a challenge but we made some ground up in the main. We had a way better car than sixth but its hard to get up front starting that deep. I made some mistakes that cost us some ground. Next year we will come back and try it again!” Stated Thiel after the event.
Next up for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team is this coming weekend, July 11th and July 12th. Friday night will bring the team to yet another half mile of Dodge County Speedway in Beaver Dam, WI and Saturday night will bring the team north to Rice Lake Speedway in Rice Lake, WI.
